A Ship of Trunks: Louis Vuitton Visionary Journeys Exhibition in Shanghai

Map showing the location of Shanghai in China.

Since the summer of 2025, there has been a new architectural highlight in Shanghai (上海 – Shànghǎi). I’m not actually a fashion blogger, and luxury brands aren’t usually at the top of my sightseeing list. However, what Louis Vuitton has created here in the heart of Shanghai is far more than just a store—it is a cultural experience that truly left a lasting impression on me. In this article, I’ll explain why a visit to the new Louis Vuitton Visionary Journeys exhibition in Shanghai is worth it and how you can secure your reservation.

An Architectural Icon: “The Louis” Docks in the Port of Shanghai

Rising from the urban bustle of Shanghai is a new building that looks like it stepped straight out of a 19th-century time travel adventure. The new flagship store, named “The Louis,” is designed in the striking shape of a giant ocean liner, with its prominent bow completely adorned with the iconic LV monogram. Standing nearly 30 meters tall—comparable to a 10-story building—the structure dominates its surroundings. I find the symbolism behind it particularly fascinating: the ship design was consciously chosen to honor Shanghai’s historical role as the most important gateway between East and West.

The facade is made of state-of-the-art materials like anodized metal and fiber-reinforced plastic, while the “deck” uses real wood to convey an authentic maritime feel. If you look closer, you’ll notice that the upper floors of the ship are designed to look like giant, stacked Louis Vuitton trunks—a tribute to the brand’s origins as a trunk maker. At night, the entire ship is transformed into a radiant light spectacle by an elaborate illumination system, making it currently one of the most popular photo spots in the city.

After Paris and New York, Shanghai is the third city where Louis Vuitton has erected an iconic “trunk building,” underlining the city’s and the Chinese market’s importance to the brand. Interestingly, Louis Vuitton was one of the first luxury brands to recognize the enormous potential of the Chinese market, opening its first store in mainland China back in 1992 at the Palace Hotel in Beijing.

The Impressive Louis Vuitton Visionary Journeys Exhibition in Shanghai

The centerpiece for visitors is the “Visionary Journeys” exhibition, designed by the renowned architect Shohei Shigematsu. The exhibition is exceptionally well-executed and is absolutely worth seeing, even for those without a passion for fashion. The tour begins spectacularly in the so-called Trunkscape, a tunnel made of glowing monogram trunks that transports you directly into a digital dream world.

In the various themed rooms, it’s about much more than just fashion. You dive into the world of craftsmanship and travel culture. I found the workshop area particularly exciting, where you can watch professionals craft bags and accessories by hand with incredible precision. If you want to dive deeper into the background info, definitely remember your headphones—you can access an informative audio guide on-site via your smartphone.

For the culinary enthusiasts among you, Le Café Louis Vuitton is located on the third floor. Under the direction of star chef Leonardo Zambrino, “Haipai cuisine” is served here—a thrilling fusion of Shanghai tradition and Western influences. The absolute hit for social media, by the way, is the Jiaozis (饺子 – Jiǎozǐ). These traditional dumplings are stamped here with the iconic LV monogram.

Your Reservation for the Louis Vuitton Exhibition in Shanghai

Now for the most important part so you don’t end up disappointed in front of closed doors. The exhibition is free, but extremely popular. Especially on weekends, it is often fully booked days in advance. A spontaneous visit is almost impossible, which is why a Louis Vuitton Shanghai reservation for the exhibition is absolutely mandatory.

Normally, everything in China runs via WeChat (微信 – Wēixìn). If you speak Chinese and have a local mobile number, simply search for the official Louis Vuitton account (路易威登, Lùyì Wēidēng) and find the booking link under the 我的 (Wǒ de – Me/My Profile) tab.

Since I know many of you travel without a Chinese number, I have a valuable tip for you: there is a hidden English-language booking page where you can simply register with your email address and secure a time slot. This saves you a lot of stress on-site! You can find the direct link to the Louis Vuitton booking page here (external link).

Why All the Effort? A Look Behind the Scenes

You might wonder why Louis Vuitton is putting in such massive effort. The answer lies in the trend toward so-called “Experiential Retail.” In China today, it’s no longer enough to just put expensive bags on shelves. People want experiences and an emotional connection to the brand. Additionally, more and more luxury purchases by Chinese customers are happening in the domestic market. Previously, Chinese customers bought luxury goods mainly while traveling in Paris or London. Today, about 65% of these purchases take place directly in mainland China. “The Louis” is the response to this shift—a place of encounter, art, and culture.

My Personal Conclusion

Even if you, like me, usually give luxury miles a wide berth: take a look at “The Louis.” The building on West Nanjing Road (南京西路 – Nánjīng Xī Lù) is an architectural highlight, and the exhibition is curated at an extremely high level. It is a fascinating piece of modern Chinese urban culture combined with French fashion heritage.

Keep in mind, however, that this is a concept store planned as a temporary installation for about two years. So, if you are in Shanghai anytime soon, take the chance! It’s the perfect spot for impressive photos and to get a feel for the new, confident China.
