Suzhou manages like almost no other place to combine the deep-rooted history of Imperial China with today’s modern, comfortable lifestyle. Known as the “Venice of the East,” Suzhou enchants visitors with its water towns and famous gardens, which served as the gold standard for aesthetics in historical China. The winding canals of the water towns lend Suzhou a romantic atmosphere that stands in stark contrast to the rapid pulse of the modern metropolis.

Generally, Suzhou is worth a visit year-round. It is most beautiful (but also most popular) in spring (March–June) and autumn (September–November). You should avoid high summer due to the extreme heat and humidity. A fascinating alternative for independent travelers is winter. While it is noticeably chilly with temperatures between 0°C and 10°C, there are significantly fewer tourists around. You’ll have the famous sights almost to yourself and experience a very unique, quiet atmosphere.
Planning Your Arrival in Suzhou
Although the city does not have its own airport, planning the transportation as part of your independent travel to Suzhou is remarkably straightforward. Suzhou is excellently connected to the Chinese high-speed rail network. The most important hub is the station Suzhou North (苏州北站 – Sūzhōu Běizhàn). Direct train connections to Suzhou are available from almost all major cities in the region. For those arriving by plane, there are two practical options:
- Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA): This is my clear recommendation. The airport is directly connected to the train station of the same name. From there, the high-speed train takes you to Suzhou in just 30 minutes.
- Wuxi (WUX): The smaller Sunan Shuofang Airport is also nearby. From here, continuing by taxi/Didi to Suzhou is the most convenient choice. The ride takes about 45 minutes depending on traffic and costs around 150 CNY.
Where to Stay in Suzhou: The Best Neighborhoods and Hotels
Choosing your accommodation depends heavily on what is most important to you during your trip. Suzhou offers a suitable neighborhood for every taste:
- Authentic in the Old Town: If you are looking for historical flair and want to be within walking distance of most sights, you should choose a small local hotel in the historical city center. For example, near the popular Pingjiang Road (平江路 – Píngjiāng Lù). Here you live right by the canals and can explore all the gardens and sights in the city center on foot. Perfect if you enjoy exploring the city by walking and want to take a break in your room between sights. The downside is that this part of the city is difficult to reach by taxi.
I stayed at the Wenlv Gusu Yard Hotel Donghuali (External Affiliate Link) with my parents and we liked it very much! The location in the Old Town was perfect for sightseeing. The rooms were clean and lovingly furnished. - Modern Comfort at Jinji Lake: If you prefer comfort and luxury, the area around Jinji Lake (金鸡湖 – Jīnjī Hú) is ideal. Here you will find international 5-star hotels amidst a modern skyline and extensive promenades. With impressive shopping malls like the Suzhou Center (苏州中心 – Sūzhōu Zhōngxīn) in the immediate vicinity, you have plenty of restaurants and cafes to choose from. Additionally, transport connections by both taxi/Didi and metro are excellent here. My favorite hotels where I have stayed myself are the Hyatt Regency (External Affiliate Link) and the Crowne Plaza (External Affiliate Link).
- Idyllic in the Water Town: For a truly special experience, you can stay directly in one of the adjacent water towns to enjoy the illuminated canals once the day-trippers have long departed. After two nights in the city center, I decided to spend one night in Zhouzhuang (周庄 – Zhōuzhuāng) with my parents, and we didn’t regret it!
